This Is Hell Drummer Leaves.
Posted in News on December 15, 2008 by thecomfortofhomeAfter touring non-stop for almost the past 5 years, Dan from Long Island band ‘This is Hell’ has decided to part ways with the band. To read the full story head over to his myspace and read this blog he posted .
I met Dan in Toronto when This is Hell toured through Canada mid way through this year and him along with the rest of the band were really nice guys and I wish him all the best. Rumour has it, we’ll be seeing This is Hell in Australia early 2009 but we’ll see.
Tragedy
Posted in News on December 15, 2008 by thecomfortofhomeA horrible thing happened to a member of an incredible hardcore band recently. The band’s name is Last Lights and they just put out a great 7″ and recorded for a split. Singer Dominic Mallary had just finished performing at a local show when he was suddenly taken to hospital with a brain aneurysm and tragically passed away. Even though I never knew this person and the only knowledge I have of him are his efforts in Last Lights and his other musical ventures, it bums me out that someone so young and so full of promise as an incredibly talented songwriter has been taken from this earth without reason. Sometimes life just isn’t fair and this is a perfect example of an event that is just unexplainable. I suggest everyone goes and buys whatever Last Lights have left because it is all going towards helping out Dominic’s family deal with some medical bills that they have no insurance for.

BREAK EVEN
Posted in Interviews on October 24, 2008 by brettxxxThe Last time I saw Mawds ( Mark Bawden ) was at the last show break even played in Melbourne, We were going to do an interview but we ended up just talking and it was real nice and I enjoy his company, fast forward something like 3 months and decided to just email him questions.

Things were pretty quiet for break even for awhile, but in the last few months you’ve had some big tours, Parkway Drive with Have Heart and Antagonist, then Carpathian with the Broderick, and now you’ve just announced the ruiner tour. How is it all going ?
Things are going really good, at the moment we have been busy writing new songs for are full length. At the end of 2007 Steffen swapped from bass to guitar and are good friend Perri (Also sings for a band called Into The Sea www. myspace. com/intothesearock) Joined the band to play bass. Since then everything has been going really well for break even. We set are selves a plan at the start of 2008 to tour as much as we could and record for a full length in December. Every tour we have been on this year has been amazing, Playing awesome shows, meeting new friends and just getting to see new places ive never seen before. What else could you ask for!
Along with just announcing the ruiner tour, You’ve started mentioning the full length, have you started recording? when is it out? what can be expected? e.t.c?
We are set to record 12 new songs in December, and hopefully will be out early 2009. Were really siked with the new songs and cant wait for people to hear them. We will be playing a few new songs on the upcoming ruiner tour. Expect a more mature sound of break even as we have all grown up a lot since we released the “young at heart” ep and so has are music.
I’ve never been to Perth, But I want to real bad, people ask me why and I’ll have one of two answers “I think the girls might be hot” or “break even live there”. What’s Perth hardcore like at the moment?
At the moment the hardcore music scene over here is really well. I just went and saw my friends play there first show tonight and they were awesome if you like bands in the vein of mental check these guys out The others (www. myspace. com/theothers). Since ive been going to shows a lot of great perth bands have broken up but there is still some great bands like Miles Away, Extortion, Battletruk, 3 Days Later still repping the core. More and more new bands are starting up and starting to play shows bands like Without A Word, Strong Finish, Vengenace.
2 bands from perth everyone should check out as there have stuff coming up!
Something More www. myspace. com/somethingmorehc ( New CD and East Coast Tour in december!)
Bridge the Gap www. myspace. com/bridgethegaphc (New EP out on January 09!)
Do you find that living in Perth is a disadvantage or an advantage?
It depends flying east to play shows can empty the pocket but in the end getting to see new places and playing music to people that have never seen you before makes its all worth it. As for living in perth and playing shows you can play shows from Geraldton (5 hours north of perth) to Margret River ( 4 hours south of Perth) So coming over to playing shows your defiantly not going to not have a good time as you would get to see a lot of WA and play shows to new people. The Shows in perth are always really fun and so are the people, Any band thinking of coming to perth be sure to play the Prince of Wales in Bunbury! We also have a All Age Venue called YMCA HQ which basically is a skatepark and a room where bands can play, not many places in australia have that to offer. Almost every perth all age show is done there and the people that work there are great. I suggest everyone should start a band and tour perth! More so in summer as we have nice beaches and its a pretty friendly place.
I remember once speaking to you at a show, and you were eating a water melon, and I was waiting for a friend to bring me Maccas, you said “On tour you have to eat healthy, you just got to” so I didn’t finish my Maccas . what are some tour tips to staying fit.
Since then ive found all the great places to eat over east while on tour and haven’t really been that healthy but how can you help it your only usually there for a short time so why not indulge!!!! haha While on tour your defiantly not going to eat all the foods you normal eat at home, but i do try to eat as healthy as i can fruit is always a winner with me i can never have enough fruit. And if you can find a curry house hit it up! Always cheap and always great food! its also a plus having a veg/vegan person in your band as they always know some great places to eat.
Obviously skating, surf culture comes to mind when people think break even, and people think your a fun band, but the songs are serious, when Young At Heart came out I was just finishing high school and that record hit me, and I just thought “This guy knows”. When I listen to it, it makes me wish hardcore was bigger than it is, so it could help more kids out. Did any bands help you out growing up?
Naming every band that helped me grow up to where i am today i would be here for hours typing but my cousin bought me a Lagwagon cd for a christmas back in the day and since then ive figured out, i always liked music that makes you want to move your head or move your leg to the beat and the more you listen to the music and actually read about what the bands message or what there trying to say is a great thing to grown up with and will always be with you and make you the person you are today.
now for a little fun.
If you could tour with any band that isn’t punk/ hardcore who would it be?
Sigur Ros, i could watch them every night of the year.
